You'll be pleased to know that all UK medical schools are of a very high standard, so deciding which is the best medicine university will really depend on your individual preferences and requirements.

There are various ranking tables available online for the UK medical schools, and you'll see they all have different rankings/criteria! Essentially, there is no clear-cut answer to this question. In 2022, according to the Guardian, the top 10 best medicines to study medicine in the UK were: Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Brighton, Swansea, Oxford, Dundee, Cambridge, St Andrews, Keele and Bristol.

There are currently 5 medical colleges in London, and each has completely different entry requirements. If you are planning to study medicine in London, it is imperative that you use this list, and read about each of the medicine universities to find out more about how you can boost your chances of studying at one of the best medical schools in London.

These are the five medical universities in London:

It is important that you consider how each of these medicine universities in London has different entrance requirements. Simply, Imperial & UCL require the BMAT, whereas King's, Queen Mary's and St George's require the UCAT.

Remember, these are often the most competitive universities that you can apply to. Many applicants are already from London, others want to study in London because of the clinical schools or location. We would recommend also considering medical universities outside of London (or a short distance from London) to help balance your application. This could include universities such as Brighton, Kent, Birmingham, Warwick, Aston, Leicester and Anglia Ruskin.

What is the easiest medical school to get into the UK?

This is a very tricky question to answer, medicine is notoriously one of the most difficult degrees to get into in the UK. There is extremely tough competition for places, as such, there is no easy medical school that one can get into in the UK. Having said that, it is important to consider the institutions that you are applying to. Traditionally, some of the newer universities are likely to receive fewer applications and therefore you will have a greater chance of getting into them.

The medical schools council is the governing body that looks after and represents all of the medical schools. in the UK. They run events throughout the year and help govern the application process to these medical schools. Do check out their website for more information on this.

New Medical Schools UK

There are a number of relatively new medical schools in the UK. This has occurred due to the shortage of doctors, with many universities receiving funding to run medical courses. Some of the newer medicine universities in the UK include:

  • Sunderland

  • Anglia Ruskin

  • Kent & Medway

  • Lincoln 

  • Edge Hill

  • Worcester

  • Chester

  • Brunel

They must all adhere to the protocols and rules set by the GMC when running their medical school.
